MEMORIAL DAY @ SVAHCS
Article by Alan Edwards

Held annually on the official Memorial-Day date, May 30, the Southern VA Health Care System in Tucson is host to a Memorial Day Ceremony. More of a ceremony than a service, the event is relatively brief, but quite elegant in both setting and style.

This year’s ceremony featured a posting of colors by the “Lady Phantoms” Color Guard from American Legion Post-109, and a sequential rendering of taps by five members of the “Echo Taps Project”. In between were inspirational speeches and songs by vocalist Shelly McIntyre.

A number of dignitaries were present, including senior VA officials and 7th District Congressman Raul M Grijalva. The VFW was well represented by PNC Bob Curio as a special guest, and a number of members and Auxiliary in the audience; including Department SAVS Representative (and Post-10188 Commander) Mike O’Daniels and PDP Bernice Welsh. Following the ceremony, refreshments were provided by the “Gold Star Wives of America”. All in all this was an inspirational event.
